Aikido, or "way of
harmony", is a Japanese martial art of self-defense which
was developed in the last century by the founder Morihei
Ueshiba. Aikido is a graceful but dynamic martial art that
requires little physical strength to perform, so anybody can
practice. Unlike other martial arts, emphasis in Aikido is not
directed towards street fighting or the advancement of
students through competitive tournaments. Training stresses
form, mutual cooperation, awareness of others, and
coordination of body movement with a calm state of
mind. Currently Aikido is in use worldwide by civilian,
police, military, and other specialty groups.
In Aikido class,
everyone trains together from beginner to advanced.
There are no separate beginner classes. New students may
start Aikido training at any time, feeling relaxed &
comfortable with the class. As a student progresses,
they will train with other students of higher skill levels,
thereby enhancing their physical and mental knowledge of
Aikido
